[ˈwɛɫ.kə̃m]

I am a researcher in functional linguistics, focusing on the intersection of pragmatics and prosody in my research, that is how meaning is shaped by intonation. I am currently employed as a post-doc at the Department of Department of English and American Studies at the University of Vienna. For my PhD (supervised by Prof. Evelien Keizer), I looked into the prosody of information packaging (think, among other notions, Topic, Focus, Contrast) in spontaneously produced British English. Now, in my post-doc project, I am investigating the discourse-structural features of Contrast in more detail, focussing on its grammatical (i.e. morphosyntactic and prosodic) marking in contemporary English.

I approach my research through the lens of Functional Discourse Grammar. You can learn more about the theory, its basic architecture, as well as the researchers active in the field here. Since 2021, I am also a member of the Fun*Cog research group. More information about who we are and what we do can be found here.
